Faces to Watch... Charlton Hill, 26
(B Magazine,
April '03)

he's a sydney surfer. his debut album's called waterline. go figure.

where do you call home?
the northern beaches of sydney. i pretty much grew up in the water and have been surfing since i was about 12. london is a bit of a second home now. i lived there on and off for a couple of years and recorded the album there.

your home was once destroyed in a bushfire...
yeah, in 1994. it took about a year to come to terms with it. there were no possessions left from 20 years. i had to start again.

are you as deep and serious as the songs on your album suggest?
i have moments of being so but i'm becoming a little less so now. i've shed some of the things that were haunting me and i'm moving on to greener pastures. depth, yes. serious, perhaps less.

do you get into the rock star lifestyle or are you a yoga and tofu guy?
i have a finger in both pies. one week, i could be preaching fruit juices and vegetables and the next week there won't be a single dry day. i live an extremist, balanced lifestyle.

the favourite place you've visited?
iceland. it's one of the most bizarre places on earth. it has 20 hours of daylight, beaches of volcanic rock and the people are intriguing. like bjork; hers is a common sort of look over there. i've been to a few great places but that's the one that's ringing in my ears.
