The Inquisition... Charlton Hill
(The Sun-Herald,
March '03)

you grew up in sydney's northern suburbs, and you've been signed by sony music as their "next big thing". do you feel part of a new, vibrant sydney scene, as opposed to the bands emerging from melbourne?
they are certainly very different music scenes. i spent my life growing up near the water, or on the coast, so it was great to take that sound into inner-city pubs. i think sydney is catching up to melbourne, definitely.

your single deep has already been well received, but your debut album waterline is set to be released in about a fortnight. how are your nerves?
it's totally exciting. because the single has been accepted by the public, it sort of cracked the ice for me. i'm just waiting to see how it goes, but it will be great to have the album out there.

your songs seem to dwell on water themes. was that a deliberate choice?
i'd written so many songs with natural references, so when i cose the tracks for the album it emergeed as a theme. but the "waterline" is very much about an invisible line i have crossed socially and personally.

you seem a long way removed from the world of blokey rock'n'roll. are you a sensitive new-age guy?
well, i grew up with two sisiters so i blame them! i guess i really discovered who i was when i travelled overseas, and spent some time living in london. it provides a whole new perspective on your own upbringing and the places that mean something to you.

charlton hill's album waterline will be released in march 17.
